If you came across this post as you searched for foreclosure data, this may not be the most current blog post about foreclosure stats. Please click "Foreclosures" on the right and you will find the latest post. Thank you for stopping by!
In February, I blogged about foreclosures and since then I've received a lot of questions and positive feedback about the article. I felt that it was time to share another update with you, since a few months have gone by and the numbers are always changing. The data I am about to share with you is the most current, and it comes from the March 2009 numbers. In a few weeks, the April numbers should be available and I will plan to share the facts with you again in a future blog post.
According to Realty Trac, a national foreclosure trend reporting company, there are currently 4,236 properties in foreclosure in Washington State. That translates to 1 out of every 647 housing units is in foreclosure.
- King County has 1,135 properties in foreclosure, which means 1 out of every 719 housing units is in foreclosure.
- Pierce County has 984 properties in foreclosure, which means 1 out of every 319 housing units is in foreclosure.
- Snohomish County has 551 properties in foreclosure, which means 1 out of every 500 housing units is in foreclosure.
Even though our numbers are worse than what I reported in February, things are not as bad as they seem here in Washington. Let’s look at our neighbors in Oregon. According to Realty Trac, the state has 4,236 homes in foreclosure which translates to 1 out of every 475 housing units is on foreclosure whereas 1 out of every 647 housing units are in foreclosure in our state.
Here are the top five states with properties in foreclosure, according to the data published by Realty Trac. It's the same top five I reported on last time, except that Nevada has climbed to #3 and Arizona has slid to the #4 worst position in the nation.
- California has the most number of properties in foreclosure: 107,785, which means 1 out of every 123 housing units is in foreclosure.
- Florida has 47,131 properties in foreclosure, which means 1 out of every 184 housing units is in foreclosure.
- Nevada has 19,849 properties in foreclosure, which means 1 out of every 55 (!!) housing units is in foreclosure.
- Arizona has 18,876 properties in foreclosure, which means 1 out of every 141 housing units is in foreclosure.
- Illinois has 15,398 properties in foreclosure, which means 1 out of every 340 housing units is in foreclosure.
Do you remember the song "Things Can Only Get Better" by new-wave synth artist Howard Jones? I know it may sound overly optimistic, but I really like this song and it has been playing in my head as I publish these gloomy statistics. It will take some time for "things to get better," but I believe things will turn around and get better. Until then, I leave you with this link to view the video for this song on YouTube. :)
