Foreclosure Statistics & Facts - February 2010

Today is the 11th, and I had a feeling this would be the day the RealtyTrac foreclosure data would be available, and sure enough, I saw an article in the Seattle Times about February 2010's foreclosures this morning.

I heard a news radio reporter say that the lower foreclosure numbers across the nation are most likely due to heavy snow.  The media attributes the smaller numbers to workers not being able to make it into the office or to the homes to post foreclosure notices.  I don't know about that... February's foreclosures in Washington fell 24 percent from January's numbers and we had sunny clear skies and no snow last month.

According to Realty Trac, a national foreclosure trend reporting company, the February 2010 data shows that Washington State ranks #26 in the list of 50 states with foreclosures, #1 being the state with the most foreclosures.  Today's data shows there were 2,670 properties in foreclosure in Washington State in February.  This number translates to 1 out of every 1,027 housing units in foreclosure - way down from where I've seen the number before.  "Housing units" means "stick-built single family houses," condominiums and townhouses.

Month's End, February 2010:

  • King County had 651 properties in foreclosure, which means 1 out of every 1,254 housing units is in foreclosure.  This is much less foreclosures in King County than I've seen before in the months I've been reporting.
  • Pierce County had 552 properties in foreclosure, which means 1 out of every 569 housing units is in foreclosure.  Pierce County also had less foreclosures.
  • Snohomish County had 498 properties in foreclosure, which means 1 out of every 553 housing units is in foreclosure.  Again - it's nice to see a smaller number of homes in foreclosure compared with past months.

Our neighbors in Oregonwere also in better shape with 3,312 homes in foreclosure which is 1 out of every 485 housing units in foreclosure.  Oregon ranks 20th in the nation for homes in foreclosure.

Here are the top five states in the U.S. with properties in foreclosure, according to the data published this month by RealtyTrac.

  1. California still had the most number of properties in foreclosure in the nation: 68,562, which means 1 out of every 185 housing units is in foreclosure.
  2. Florida had 54,032 properties in foreclosure, which means 1 out of every 161 housing units is in foreclosure.
