Third Annual Ronald McDonald House Toiletries Drive

Seattle Ronald McDonald House

Many of us know someone who has had a child receive care at Children’s Hospital or we've had a child of our own be treated there.  We’ve heard the many success stories of children that have overcome their health issues.  As Puget Sound residents, we are so blessed to live in an area with such excellent doctors.  Not everyone who visits Children’s Hospital is a local resident.  Hundreds of families travel thousands of miles to visit the Seattle Children’s Hospital because of their specialized doctors, and they have an opportunity to stay at the Seattle Ronald McDonald House for less than the cost of a hotel stay.  According to their website, more than 800 families use RMDH as their home away from home each year, making the Seattle location the second largest House in the world.  This year the nightly rate increased from $20 to $25.

Please join me in collecting toiletry items for the families that stay at the Seattle Ronald McDonald House (RMDH).  These rooms are not like hotels and are not equipped with toiletry items for the families, so the RMDH relies on donations from vendors and caring individuals like yourself.  The families staying at RMDH are often stressed with the enormous travel expenses and medical bills and having a few free toiletry items on hand will truly help them.

Here are the toiletry items the RMDH needs.  Do you have any extra new & unused toothbrushes from dentist appointments or hotel stays?  Please ask your dentist if they can donate toothbrushes and toothpastes.  By the way, the small trial sizes are appreciated just as much as full size!

Toothpaste - Toothbrushes - Floss - Liquid Body Wash - Body Lotion - Shampoo - Conditioner - Soft Hand Soap - Bar Soap

THERE ARE ONE OF THREE WAYS TO GET THE DONATED ITEMS TO RMDH

1) Just give me a call, and I will be happy to drop by and collect the toiletry items from you at your office.

Ronald McDonald House Toiletries Drive

I just wanted to take the time to publicly thank all those that participated in the Seattle Ronald McDonald House toiletries drive in late 2008.  As usual, we had a lot of donations to give, and I thank all of you for helping.  I know there are still at least three more people that have items to give, but the snow and flooding has kept us from getting together.  I visit Ronald McDonald House a few times each year, and will gladly deliver any more toiletry items that are donated - so keep them coming!

These are the people I would like to thank for helping with donations this last time:

MaryAnn Andersen, Kim Baldwin, Pamela Rundle, Claire Seigenthaler, Jill Sharon with Dr. Hardy's Dental office, Ky Tan, Becky Taylor, and Christle Brehm - owner of East Hill Massage Clinic.  Christle, Tina, and their clients donated several bags of goods and I really appreciate their efforts.

Here are pictures from January 6th, 2009 when I took the goods to RMDH.  I had hoped to drop off the goods shortly after December 15th, but my care does not drive in the snow, so after the huge snowfall I figured I'd better wait until after the first of the year to make the delivery.

This was a VERY windy, rainy day, and it was hard to hold the camera steady.

Just for fun, here's a picture of Ronald and me.

I'm Back!

I'll have to post more about this later, but I have returned from my trip to Virginia.  Last week I flew out to help a good friend and past client move from Virginia to Washington State.  She and her husband have a beautiful 9 month old baby girl that has been in Children's Hospital since she was born.  This happy baby was born with some serious medical issues and requires special care and attention.  It was my job to help my friend by taking turns driving, sitting in back with the baby and keeping her happy and entertained, helping my friend pack up the house, help her remember to do things, and and acting as her personal assistant for whatever she needed.

This baby is the reason I have gotten so involved in helping at the Seattle Ronald McDonald House.  My colleagues and I have made dinner for the families at RMDH; I have an on-going toiletries drive (shampoos, conditioners, soap, toothpaste, etc.) for RMDH; and I participate in donating to the John L. Scott Foundation which supports Children's Hospital.  This trip out to Virginia was my first time actually meeting the baby, so it was a treat and an honor for me to have the opportunity to fly out to meet her and help her family.

We planned to drive across the country over 6 days but my friend's daughter ended up in the hospital with an infection, so we were delayed 4 days.  After much urging from my church family, we decided to change our plans and my friend, her baby and I flew home Wednesday the 2nd while her husband and their pets drove across the country Tuesday through Thursday night.  This is a very long story made short, but I need to catch up on work so I plan to expand on this more, later.

Thank you, to those of you that showed such concern for someone you didn't know!  I received many emails of support from my friends and church family during my trip.  It means so much to me to see so many people that care.  I am pleased to report that my friend, her husband, baby and pets are all in their new home in the Seattle area and that the baby is doing okay.  :)

Ronald McDonald House

I just got back from the Seattle Ronald McDonald House (RMcDH).  The weather was cold but sunny, so it was a great day for driving!  I had a great time being up there again to see some of the children and visit with Kate Van Dyke, the Development Assistant for RMcDH.  Thanks to all the wonderful donations from my friends and family, I was able to drop off about 10 grocery bags of items that the families can use!  I think I am going to start collecting items for them twice per year.

If you missed my earlier blog, you may not know what this is about.  I ran a small toiletries drive for the RMcDH of Seattle by sending a mailing to all of my past Real Estate Buyers and Sellers, as well as my friends, family members, Lenders and Title and Escrow contacts.  Next time you stay in a hotel, please save the mini shampoo, conditioner, soaps, razors or other small personal items you don't use.  I will be happy to collect them from you and take them to some people that really need them.  The families that stay at the RMcDH while their child is receiving care at Children's Hospital are not provided with all the amenities a hotel would.  They only receive personal care items that have been donated to RMcDH by private individuals or organizations.

You can find more information about Ronald McDonald House here: http://www.rmhcseattle.org/

You'll see a "Support RMDH" link that shows all the items on their wish list.  Some of the items they would love to have include: telephone cards (minutes), microwaves, roll-away beds, gift cards for grocery stores, small refrigerators, Wii games, white linens and towel sets.

Here is their grocery shopping list: http://www.rmhcseattle.org/donate/rmhc_shop_list.pdf  incase you'd like to drop off some groceries!

Anyway, it really warmed by heart to be able to deliver so many goods to them, on behalf of you.  By all of us just doing a little, we can accomplish so much!  Thank you all.  :)

Here is Kate Van Dyke (on the left), my contact at the Seattle Ronald McDonald House, and me with Ronald and the 10 or so bags of goods I dropped off.
